Surgical Sterilization (Tubal Sterilization)
Tubal sterilization is among the most effective and convenient methods of contraception for women who have decided they do not wish to become pregnant in the future. The procedure consists of three visits to our center.

During the first visit you will discuss the procedure with the surgeon. You will have a medical history and gynecological examination. If your results are normal and tubal sterilization is the appropriate method of contraception for you, your procedure will be scheduled. This can be as early as the following week except for Medical Assistance Patients who have a mandatory 30 day waiting period.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately thirty minutes. The doctor inserts a laparoscope, a small telescope with a light source, through a tiny incision below your navel and uses cauterization to seal the fallopian tubes necessary for pregnancy. After a brief period (30 - 60 minutes) in our recovery room, you may return home and resume normal activity within 1-2 days. It is vital that you have an escort to drive you home and a caregiver there.
One week later, you will have a brief follow-up visit to the surgical center for an examination and suture removal.

Non-Surgical Sterilization
Quinacrine Sterilization is a permanent non surgical sterilization procedure for women. It allows women to become permanently sterilized without invasive surgery. The procedure is ideal for women with special health issues such as respiratory disease, diabetes, obesity, or who have had abdominal surgery before.

The procedure consists of the insertion of Quinacrine pellets into the uterus through the vagina. There are two insertions, one month apart. There is very little discomfort and you will be able to return to work by the next day.

Permanent sterilization occurs when the pellet dissolves and the liquid makes its way to the fallopian tubes. The Quinacrine causes scar tissue which in turn blocks the tube. The first pellet must be inserted between the 6th and 12th day of your menstrual cycle with the second insertion a month later.

Contraception must be used for a total of at least 12 weeks from the date of the first insertion to ensure no pregnancy occurs before the Quinacrine Sterilization takes effect.

Quinacrine Sterilization has proved to be extremely safe. In fact it is far safer than surgical sterilization and results in far fewer complications that require hospitalization.
